Vodafone Upgrade won’t Make Much of a Difference in Speeds
Vodafone is all set to become the pioneer in providing the new generation HSDPA, with the successful upgrade of its mobile broadband speed to 14.4Mbps in areas of London, Birmingham and Liverpool.
Vodafone had earlier claimed to provide one of the speediest networks in the UK, with a working speed of 7.2Mbps. However, the company later admitted that their actual speeds in fact did not exceed 5Mbps.
The company now plans to spread its new upgraded mobile broadband UK network to other parts of the country in the coming months. However, even this time the real speed may again fall behind the advertised speed. This is mainly because wireless broadband is limited by various factors like the distance of the user from the closest base station and the total number of customers, using the connection. Therefore, even users in the newly upgraded areas may not be able to notice a marked change in broadband speeds.
Vodafone has admitted that even in the upgraded areas, users will not be able to get high speeds of 14.4Mb, and that the average speed is likely to remain in the 1Mbps to 5Mbps bracket, with the maximum reaching 10.8Mbps.
Jeni Mundy, Vodafone UK’s chief technology officer, said that the company is very optimistic about its plans and that the upgrade is an indication to the customers that Vodafone is constantly endeavouring towards improving quality of service and network speeds in line with increasing demands.
