Atlanta Residents Can Go Green with Car Recycling
With the many hazards our world has experienced these past few years, such as climate change, it’s about time we all become more environmentally friendly.
Find out below how some of your car parts can be recycled:
Metal - Comprising approximately 76% of the weight of your vehicle, the metal parts can be sold for reuse. It’s good to know that a number of car companies nowadays, such as General Motors, Mazda and Volkswagen, are doing their best to reduce the percentage of a recycled car that ends up in a landfill. For instance, Mazda intends to recycle 90% of each car by designing dismantled parts more easily and utilizing similar plastics throughout the car to help alleviate separation for recycling. Also, by shredding some of the metals recovered from the vehicle, they can be used by steel industries and re-smelting plants.
Polyurethane products (truck bed liners and floor mats) - Industrial and post-consumer foam is grinded into powders and used to create new foam. Flexible foam underlay from mats and carpets is bonded collectively to produce new padding products. Polyurethane particles are pressed, layered with a binder and then cured in heat and pressure. These pressed particles can be used to build parts, such as tire covers and car floor mats.
Plastic and foam (car seats) - You probably aren’t aware that 95% of the materials used to form a car seat can be recovered. Car seats are dismantled and components are divided for regular recycling (metal, plastic and foam).
Battery - Used batteries should be disposed properly, as their lead content can cause brain damage, especially in fetuses and young kids. But with many local authorities and garages having many collection points, batteries can now be easily recycled. Also, some retail stores are even offering discounts on used batteries.
Tires - Highly recyclable, scrap tires can be re-treaded or turned into a range of products - from rubber paving, tug boat fenders, tire swings and many others.
If you have an old car, don’t simply ignore it, as most of its parts can still be salvaged. At the same time, you’re helping preserve the environment through car recycling.
